Best practices in promoting responsible and sustainable mineral resources development in the MIMAROPA Region took spotlight in the recently held “MineResponsibility: Know Mine, Know Life – Elevating the Mission of Responsible Mining” virtual stakeholders’ forum, February 10-11, via the Zoom platform.
This forum, organized by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Office (CO) in partnership with the CALABARZON and MIMAROPA Regional Offices, brought together almost 1,000 partners and stakeholders from the mining industry, national and local government agencies, academe, media, and civil society to discuss the recent policies and development in the minerals sector.
Opening the two-day forum presentations is Engr. Ellengrace R. Galiste, MGB MIMAROPA Region’s Chief of the Mine Management Division (MMD) and Gender and Development Focal Person, who provided a refresher on the Bureau’s mandate and its primary accomplishments.

The said event also featured the recipients of the 2021 Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Awards (PMIEA) and their best practices in elevating the nationwide mission of responsible mining.
For the MIMAROPA Region awardees, Mr. Jay Pee R. Dela Cruz, Environment Department Head of Berong Nickel Corporation (BNC), presented “Ridge to Reef: BNC’s Holistic Approach on Environmental Programs”; while Engr. Benjamin Armand A. Tansingco, Vice President for Environmental Management of Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC), tackled “The Bedrock of CBNC’s Operations: Community Engagement.”

Other presentations include discussions on Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2021-40 and relevant policy matters on lifting the ban on open-pit mining by Engr. Marcial H. Mateo, Chief of the MGB-CO Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division; Harmonizing the Mining Operations of an Operator Under a Mining Tenement (DAO No. 2021-37) by Engr. Edgardo D. Castillo, Chief of MGB CALABARZON-MMD; and Memorandum Order No. 2022-001 on the "Guidelines Determining the Taxable Percentage of Gold and Iron Content as Associated Minerals in Dredged Materials" by Engr. Juancho Pablo S. Calvez, OIC Assistant Director and concurrent Chief of the MGB-CO Metallurgical Technology Division.
Lastly, the lectures of seven other PMIEA awardees highlighted Agata Mining Ventures Inc.’s "Inspiring Change: Agata's journey to transformative mining"; Platinum Group Metals Corporation’s "Protecting the Environment and Creating a Sustainable Community"; Republic Cement and Building Materials Inc.’s "Building a Stronger Republic through Responsible Mining"; Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation’s "Responsible Mineral Processing Operations in the New Normal"; and the best practices in responsible mining at Taganito Mining Corporation, Hinatuan Mining Corporation, Mindanao Mineral Processing & Refining Corporation.
